This was the fifth mock Mars mission of the NASA-funded HI-SEAS program (Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation). The crew are part of a study designed to better understand the psychological impacts a long-term space mission would have on astronauts.

Each participant in the study wore  sensors that measured voice levels and proximity to other people in the habitat. The sensors could sense if people were avoiding one another or socializing normally.

During the mission, four men and two women lived in isolation from the rest of planet, eating only stored foods and lab-grown vegetables. When communicating with the outside world, they had to deal with a realistic 20-minute delay. Most importantly, space suits were worn outside at all times.

The next 8-month mission, HI-SEAS VI, is scheduled to begin in 2018.

Pirate Bay users recently discovered JavaScript code being used that revealed a cryptocurrency miner was in place on the torrent website. The code uses a visitors CPU to mine Monero bitcoins, a crypto currency launched in 2015. Users on Reddit.com started to notice the strange behavior after significant spikes in their CPU usage while on certain Pirate Bay pages.

The file sharing site confirmed to Torrent Freak that it was using the miner as part of a 24-hour test to see if it could be used as a permanent way to generate revenue, allowing them to replace ads altogether. The Pirate Bay spokesperson said they might have more information in the future.

Users quickly found that the miner can be blocked by disabling JavaScript in the browser settings or using ad blockers. The Chrome extension ScriptSafe seems to prevent this from happening. Users can also disable the miner with a plugin like NoScript or ScriptBlock or by adding Coinhive to an ad blocker’s blacklist.

The Pirate bay risks angering users and losing credibility as the most widely respected in the file sharing space.

In previous postings we only saw the top half of the suit, but now we now have the head-to-toe look. Gone are the days of puffy space suits and heavy boots. It’s likely this is just the base of the suit and more accessories will be added as SpaceX moves towards their Mars mission.

The suits are only for use inside the Dragon capsule or transferring to other vehicles where the environment is pressurized, not a long walk in the cold vacuum of space. Rest assured, those suits will be closer to Nasa’s classic space suits we all love and know.
